1. If you have facilitated health teaching in your practicum setting, what are some tools that you utilized to determine if the education was effective? All health care professionals have specific roles they must carry out. The term role is described as a set of behaviors that fit together into a unified whole. It defines the behaviors or actions that are expected of that professional. Therefore, it is important to understand each role. On the other hand, the scope of practice denotes the activities that individuals of a particular profession are legally allowed to perform due to their education. It establishes boundaries. However, it is possible for roles to overlap, such as a nurse and a physician. As stated in the text, no professional has all the skills or knowledge to carry out all aspects of patient care. For example, a physician’s scope of practice is medicine, but they do not possess the knowledge or capability to perform all aspects of medical care. Hence there are several specialties, such as oncology, radiology, cardiology, pediatrics, etc. Each health care professional is guided by their own rules and scopes of practice (Slusser et al., 2019). In a hospital, several members have important roles to ensure the hospital is successful such as a chief operating officer (COO), chief medical officer (CMO), and nursing manager. Throughout my practicum, I’ve learned that the COO is second in command and reports to the CEO or President (whichever applies to the organization). The COO is responsible for managing and handling the daily business operations and works closely with various department heads in support of employees’ daily activities. The COO also ensures that these activities align with the organization’s overall vision, goal, and strategy (University of Maryland, n.d.). A CMO is a licensed physician who oversees the clinical operations in a medical setting; they don’t provide patient care. CMOs ensures patients receive high-quality treatments, work to implement cost-effective services, hire, train, and evaluate new physicians, and act as liaisons between doctors and health care executives (Best Colleges, n.d.). Nursing Managers oversee patient care, make management and budgetary decisions, arrange schedules, coordinate meetings, recruit and train new nurses, and maintain records. They also implement and enforce regulatory guidelines for patient safety and inform staff of any changes (Duquesne University School of Nursing, 2022). As an administrator, it’s important to know each profession’s roles and scopes of practice. The best way to know if everyone is functioning as they should is to familiarize and educate yourself about each profession you give oversight to. This could entail learning about the regulations and rules for nurses, physicians, etc. You could create a spreadsheet jotting down the similarities (overlap) and differences. It would also help to be active such as frequently communicating with employees and patients, conducting huddles, rounds, meetings, audits, reports, surveys, etc. This could help determine whether people are actually performing their assigned tasks or not and provide clarity and direction when necessary 2.According to the statement above what can one agree and or disagree with? The scope of practice varies from a healthcare professional’s day-to-day responsibilities and roles. The scope of practice can also vary by state as they are responsible for creating the legislation relating to healthcare practices and standards (Burger, 2022). The scope of practice includes a dynamic set of regulations to ensure the public is safe and protected, offer reassurance that the healthcare worker is competent to provide care and provide standards and discipline to healthcare practice and standards (Burger, 2022). Specifically, the scope of practice details the services that a healthcare worker is permitted to perform, while roles and responsibilities include policies and procedures the healthcare worker must follow; generally written in their job description (Burger, 2022). Yet, an employer or organization cannot legally add policies or procedures outside the scope of practice implemented by their state entity (Burger, 2022). Three roles that are currently active at my practicum site include a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Nurse (RN or LPN), and Operations (Directors, Administrative Staff). The roles included for a CNA include daily life tasks such as assisting with feeding, washing, brushing teeth, transferring, and documentation. Nurses are responsible for monitoring vitals, machines (ventilators), medication administration, and documentation. Finally, the Operations team is involved in authorizations for care, billing, intakes, licensing, and ensuring documentation for staying at the site is accurate. It is quite clear when a team member may be stretching outside of their scope of practice. One recent example came from a CNA and a nurse. The CNA asked to administer medications to a patient that was having trouble sleeping and pain. Yet, the nurse manager on the floor educated the CNA on why the CNA cannot administer medication as it is outside of their scope of practice and the nurses are educated in doses and types of medication to give the residents. .
