Interview with fireman or police officer: School Police Officer Community’s Health issues I interviewed officer J.D. (personal communication August 20, 2024) he has been working as a school police officer for 8 years in Edinburg North High School. Officer J.D. stated his major concern for a community health issue is vaping amongst the teens in the schools. He noticed an increase of vaping in recent years and a significant percentage of kids in high school smoking nicotine and marijuana vapes. More and more kids are not caring to be seen smoking in school areas especially after skool (J.D.,2024). Part of the problem starts at home, parents need to closely monitor their children and inspect their backpacks or their rooms for hidden vapes because some even look like a pen or a highlighter (J.D., 2024). With all these new vapes being made to conceal what they are they are hiding right underneath adult noses (J.D.,2024), Community’s Safety issues Gangs are not heard of much like before int he area, but recently teens have been attempting to make a small gang like groups, selling vapes and pills in the school setting (J.D.,2024). We have caught three teens attempting to distribute alprazolam from Mexico on the first week of school (J.D., 2024). Strengths of the Community The city has an ordinance that prevents businesses, especially restaurants, from allowing people to smoke in public spaces or providing a “smoking area” (J.D., 2024). We have been working hard in the school system to do random checks for vapes being consumed or sold in the school setting (J.D., 2024). Interview with librarian, schoolteacher, school nurse or administrator : School Nurse Community’s Health issues I interviewed M.K. (personal communications August 20th, 2024). M.K. has been a school nurse for 12 years and been a nurse for 18 years. Recently kids have been overweight and obese. Obesity is prevalent in the community, due to the foods they eat (M.K., 2024). There is a Little Cesars, Wing Stop, and a Mcdanals a few feet away from the school doors, kids after school go and eat there and avoid eating the school lunches provided, teens are coming into my office weighing over 200 lbs. (M.K.,2024). Community’s Safety issues Kids are having more access to tobacco products recently with the vapes, they Don’t care for the risks of smoking just because they taste like cherry or fancy flavors, tobacco is becoming a problem (M.K.,2024). I see more asthma or kids from athletics complaining of shortness of breath (M.K., 2024). Strengths of the Community Schools in Edinburg have implemented that no snack machines be available in school or outside foods be dropped off by parents during lunch hours. Our school menu is that of a healthy balanced meal appropriate for the kids and their growth (M.K.,2024). Analyze and summarize your observations and the input from key informants and a summary of community. Identify health or lifestyle issues (include at least 2), safety issues (include at least 1) and strengthens (at least 2) of the community. Remember to cite personal communication as appropriate:
