53. Since admission 4 days ago, a client has refused

Patient falls not only increase the time the patient is in need of inpatient care but can leadto lawsuits due to injuries sustained by patients. As of 2008, CMS no longer reimburse hospitalsfor conditions acquired during hospital visits that lengthen the patients stay. Since 2009, the jointcommission sentinel event database received nearly 500 hundred reports of injuries defined as fall 4related. As a health system we are now challenged to ensure an effective fall prevention programis implemented (Chu, 2017).Even though many patient fall strategies have been tried within oursystem and throughout health care, they have not been all together successful. Many of theseprograms were centered solely around the identification of the risk of falling. This work is mostoften conducted by nursing and other clinical staff. This type of research rarely takes into accountthe patient perspective. Even though the impact of patient falls effects the patient and their familymore than anyone, many times their voices are never heard. The more interaction the patient hasin the research, the more relevant data that can be collected to address the issue. Patientparticipation in the study is crucial to identifying what causes the fall, by identifying underlyingconditions, which can be either physical, environmental or medication related.
