Question- How does a nurse know what (if any) knowledge in a research study is usable for clinical practice? What would a critical thinker look for in the evidence before deciding to change? What influence do credibility and clinical significance have on your decisions to integrate research-based evidence into your practice?

Discussion- A nurse would know what knowledge in a research study is useable in clinical practice because he/she will make sure to validate that the information in the study is from a credible, current, and relevant to the issue they are trying to resolve. Evidence based practice is the act of turning nursing research into nursing interventions and actions. According to our text, research as evidence is helpful only when it is translated into nursing practice (Houser, 2018). This is very true because if we read current information but don’t apply it in our practice to benefit our patients, why read it at all?

A critical thinker looks for evidence based research that has yielded relevant results in clinical settings and not just studies that depict theories and ideas. While these are good studies to review as well, change can not be implemented unless there is data backing up the fact that the changes will be beneficial to patients and yield better patient outcomes. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing, “Evidence-based practice (EBP) strategies that have positive impact on patient perceptions of their ED care and increased satisfaction ratings include AIDET, Hourly Rounding, and Bedside Shift Report, which incorporate updates of test results and explanations of events occurring during a patient’s visit” (Skaggs et. al., 2018). This just shows that EBP has many benefits in the healthcare setting when applied appropriately. The findinds of this study can be used in ERs by nurses to implement changes because this study found that their methods and interventions used helped improve patient satisfaction.
