Courtney, a four-year-old, was in the care of her uncle for the day.  During lunch, Courtney began choking. Not knowing the Heimlich maneuver, her uncle panicked and ran outside to find  help.  Finally, a neighbor called 911 and Courtney was rushed to the hospital.  Ongoing attempts were made to resuscitate her.  Courtney’s parents, called by her uncle, rushed to the ER.  Courtney was pronounced dead one hour later.

Be sure to include information from an outside reference this week in your discussion posting. Remember that assigned readings are not considered an outside reference.

Discussion Questions:

1. What communication strategies could be used during resuscitation efforts to keep Courtney’s family aware of her status?

2.  How should Courtney’s family be told of her death?

3.  What is the role of the interdisciplinary team in communication for this case?

4.  How would communication be altered if this ER (like a growing number) permitted parents’ attendance during active resuscitation efforts?

5.  What can the nurse do to support the family, specifically the uncle?
