In Great Britain and Canada, about 50% of physicians are generalists. In the US, approximately 1/3 of physicians are generalists (general and family physicians, general internists, and general pediatricians). How does the distribution of nurse practitioners (AGNPs, FNPs, PNPs) compare with respect to specialty practice versus general/primary care practice and why do you think this is the case? Or, assume you are Chair of the Health Subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee. What legislation might you propose to increase the proportion of generalists, also incorporating advanced practice nurses into that legislation?
