Environmental Impacts on Health
Â
Overview
Environmental factors influence the health of everyone. According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), “climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Health is and will be affected by the changing climate through direct impacts (heat waves, droughts, heavy storms, and sea-level rise), and indirect impacts (vector-borne and airways diseases, food and water insecurity, undernutrition, and forced displacements).” You have completed assessing the physical environment characteristics of your community and now we’re going to study how the environment affects our health. A major role of the public health nurse is to protect the health of populations, so it is reasonable to expect that the public health nurse be concerned about environmental health. However, it is important for you to realize that environmental health is a priority for all nurses – not just those working in community settings. In fact, The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has included the impact of climate change as an essential in nursing education (AACN, 3.6b) and Standard 16 of the American Nurse’s Association’s (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice addresses environmental health as a very important competency. Their booklet is attached here: https://www.nursingworld.org/~4afaf8/globalassets/practiceandpolicy/work-environment/health–safety/principles-of-environmental-health-online_final.pdf
In addition, environmental quality has been identified as one of the 12 leading health indicators by the Healthy People 2030 initiative. Â

Â
Environmental health involves efforts to prevent or control environmental factors that can cause disease, injury, and disability. Nurses need to be aware of potential environmental health hazards in their community.  Not only does environmental health include the air, water, and land in which we live, but also our homes and places of work. Name at least 3 environmental hazards to your health that you can think of in each category.
