Young Professional Couple:
A young professional couple, both age 32, have been married for 8 years. They had waited 3 years to begin their family. The wife became pregnant, has a healthy baby girl. The family appears happy and the child is developing normally. Yesterday, the 3 year old girl wandered outside and is later discovered lifeless in the family pool. Although the parents found her within minutes of the incident and she was transported to the local children’s hospital where all efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. She has been determined brain dead and they are taking her off life support later today. You are part of the care team interacting with the family.
What is the best support for this family?
How can you aid in their grieving process?

She has rejected the idea of living with her children or having someone come live with her as a companion. She states she is quite capable of caring for herself and doesn’t want to be a “burden.”
