this is my fellow classmate discussion post regarding an article related to COPD., I need to reply to this post, thank you
The purpose of this study was to better understand what healthcare is offered to patients with COPD from their primary care. This study also researched what influences the care services that COPD patients receive from different primary care offices from the perspective of healthcare professionals and managers. COPD treatment guidelines were strongly researched throughout this study. Guidelines such as exercise training, education, and behavior change are all recommended in the overall care of the COPD patient. The research design of this study was a qualitatively driven and parallel mixed methods design. Both quantitative and qualitative findings were found from the study and were combined for a complete analysis of the research. This study took place in Vasterbotten County which is located in Northern Sweden. two primary care centers were chosen for research. The first primary care center was in the rural setting which is inhabited by 120,000 people. The other primary care center was located in a rural area with 2,500 people. There were specific “COPD healthcare professionals” that enrolled COPD patients from each primary care office into the COPD program. The urban office enrolled 7,500 patients and the rural office enrolled 2,500 patients. The healthcare professionals that enrolled the patients into the program strived for maximum variation in regard to gender and profession. Qualitative data was collected from January 2015 to March 2015 for research. Face-to-face interviews were conducted in order to decide which healthcare professionals would be best to choose COPD patients for the program. Questions during the interview included the professional’s experience with COPD and what influences the healthcare they provide to patients with COPD. Other questions discussed how the healthcare worker worked with COPD routines and guidelines and how they follow-up their work. Each interview lasted about 30-60 minutes each. The mean age of the healthcare professionals selected was 47 years and they had an average professional experience of 19 years. Overall, the study found that healthcare professionals are working hard to build on COPD care within the primary care setting. It was found throughout the study that many COPD patients are often shameful and uninformed about the disease. The study found that there is a gap between evidence in the shape of treatment guidelines and the healthcare that is readily available to people with COPD. The study found that further training is necessary for the professionals and that organizational improvements are needed in order to increase interprofessional collaboration and patient education. A major strength of the study was the use of the mixed methods design. By utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data from the research, there was a complete and comprehensive analysis formed. A lack of patient perspective on perceptions of people with COPD can be seen as a limitation within this study. Through this study, it was found that there is a strong patient population that feels very shameful of their COPD diagnosis. To gain more insight on this, it would have been helpful to get more information on this from the patients themselves. Understanding their perspective on this could have helped research delve deeper. I find this qualitative research study to be useful for future application as a family nurse practitioner. This research article also ties in nicely with my PICOT question regarding at-home management of COPD because it allowed me to see this health issue from the healthcare professional’s point of view. As a nurse practitioner, it will be important for me to take a step back and consider what I can do to help improve my patient’s health whether it is COPD or any other disease. It was found through this study that many COPD patients are misinformed about the disease. I see this as a flaw in the provider as far as patient education is concerned. Patient education is key in my PICOT project and it was an important aspect to this research study as well. I view patient education as my responsibility as a future nurse practitioner and hope I can
