A professional portfolio is vital not only in the nursing profession but in all filed. A professional portfolio is a document that gives a picture of a person in terms of experience, skills, and academic achievements (Burns, 2018). In nursing, a professional portfolio offers a comprehensive route or path to the academic faculty, peers, and future employers the person took to where they are as experienced and skilled nurses. It is critical to understand that a professional portfolio is more than a CV or a resume that contains an overview of the educational background, demographic location, and a person’s past and current nursing positions (Burns, 2018). Typically, a professional portfolio gives proof of a person’s expertise and competencies throughout their career; this expertise and competencies are developed through experiences a person has acquired.
When developing a professional nursing portfolio, it is critical to include licensure, a summary of education, and employment history. Also, it is essential to include supporting documents such as performance appraisals, transcripts, awards, education units, and licenses (Burns, 2018). The assigned material in this module has enabled me to appreciate the importance of branding as a health care provider. I have realized that when a person brands himself well, they will have the edge over other competent nurses; a professional portfolio that is well developed will attract employers; thus, a person will quickly secure a job. Thanks to technological advancement as people can easily create their portfolios online. For instance, online platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn can be used to create a portfolio for health care providers; the good thing about online platforms is that they are easily accessible and easy to use. Therefore, nurses should use such platforms and brand themselves to attract potential employers. The current paper explores strategies I can use to develop my professional portfolio. Also, the paper will discuss how my goals align with the institution’s emphasis on social change.
A professional portfolio plays a fundamental role in a person’s career’s success as it helps them build their mission and vision and create their development goals. The first strategy I will pursue to develop my professional portfolio is maintaining a professional portfolio that gives an overview of my experience and the nursing training I have achieved. I will keep my professional portfolio up-to-date with new academic achievements and awards. This will show that people care and are passionate about their work.
The second strategy that I will pursue is to use online platforms to develop my professional portfolio. For instance, I will use LinkedIn to create my portfolio. Numerous studies have established that professional networking and online identity are critical for health care providers as they will enable them to learn from others and market themselves to potential employers (Mitchell et al., 2021). Also, E-portfolio platforms are another strategy that will give me an online presence. The platform enables nurses to portray their career abilities, experience, skills, and standards. Also, E-portfolio will provide health care providers an opportunity to reflect on future goal setting (Mitchell et al. 2021). The strategies I will pursue align with Walden University’s emphasis on social change as it focuses on the significance of lifelong learning in our current diverse society.
