I onced witnessed a father who was found at his house after having a stroke on afternoon by his youngest daughter who was mothered by a woman who was not his wife child and was also the youngest of his 5 children. After finding her father she was informed by him to go down the street to get his older brother who was her uncle and they then called 911. After calling his other children one who was the Power of attorney. At this time the child who found him and the children who were by his wife were not speaking due to issues involving their dad having a affair on their mother. Althought the dad has always loved his outside child and didn’t like the fact that his children were having a dispute he was transported to Baptist Health in Little Rock where they later confirmed that the dad in fact did suffer from a minor stroke and would have to stay in rehab to gain his ability to live alone again. Before leaving the father told his outside child that he would see her later and that he was going to be ok. The following day the outside child attempted to call her father and was rejected by his other children. She later went to visit him and was informed that she could not see him due to his oldest daughter being the power of attorney and denying her visitation. After serveral attempts the outside kid was not allowed to talk to him. About two weeks laters the outside kid was able to get a nurse to get her dad on the phone. While speaking to her dad he pleaded that she made things right with the other children so that he could see her.  Several weeks later he died. In my opinion  he died because he wasn’t able to speak with his baby. I think this was in fact an ethical dilemmma because he was denied autonmy if he would have been able to see his child then he would still be alive today. I’ve learned that medicine isn’t the only thing that could cure a patient. It also involve love and the patients feeling as well.

One of the major ethical dilemmas in healthcare is most certainly Medicare and Medicaid patients versus private insurance. In some facilities, patients are even separated by which level of insurance they have. Government healthcare only allows for certain things while private has a larger variety of options for patients. Another contributing factor is the lack of personnel to provide safe and quality care. Often time ethics are set aside in order to get the job done. This can lead to patient maltreatment. It can also lead to patient expiration. I think that some facilities should focus on having a balance of equipment versus resources i.e. personnel, continuing education, etc. The last contributing factor includes something that has transpired in the last year. In the state of Arkansas providers can legally decline care based on religious or moral objections (https://www.pbsorg/newshour/politics/arkansas-governor-signs-bill-allowing-medical-workers-to-refuse-treatment-to-lgbtq-people). This in itself can lead to poor patient care. I really hope this law is overturned following the next election for governor. One ethical dilemma that I experienced in healthcare was having to use expired dental barriers due to the ship being stuck in the water. The ship that had our supplies were stuck in the sea due to maintenance issues. Because this happened, we had to use expired barrier equipment along with some equipment that was required for us to complete some of the patient treatments. I learned from this event that we should have received consent from the patient to use the expired items on them. Using expired items can cause material compromise and thus the patient is at risk for infection. Infection control is a major safety item in the dental field. I understand that I put the patients’ health in danger by not getting consent prior to treatment.
