One of the benefits of Big Data is that all your information is contained in one database. For example, if your Nursing Director wanted to analyze data on 30-day readmissions for patients diagnosed with DKA that information could be extracted from Big Data. Big Data may involve personal data: that is any information relating to an individual and can be anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, or a computer IP address(European Commission, 2018). The organization of Big Data would require using data mining. Data mining is the process of using software to sort through data to discover patterns and ascertain relationships(McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Data mining would give us the information needed to determine why patients with DKA were readmitted within 30 days. Reasons could be is the patient is compliant or can the patient afford their medications. One of the challenges of using big data in this example is the collection process. There is always the risk of human error. Errors are made when recording the information, the credibility of the information being recorded, and the process of data collection. The decisions that are made when conducting the analysis and developing the model and algorithms enable healthcare professionals to predict and discover patterns and trends in the data, thereby making them meaningful(McGonigle & Mastrian,2022). One strategy that I observed that could mitigate the risk of producing inaccurate results is to designate one person for data entry. In the hospital setting, there are people who are hired for that particular task only. The title may vary depending on the facility. IT specialists, data entry clerks, lead project managers, and nurse informaticists are choices of names. Whatever title they are identified by that person is specifically assigned to the role of data collection only. Limiting the number of staff handling information has been known to decrease errors. For all its stumbling blocks, big data holds the potential to change healthcare delivery for the better(Threw, 2016).
