case study depicted the M. family, with the primary focus on mother Shirley, suffering from stomach cancer. Upon being diagnosed, Shirley works with Nurse Trisha, a mental health nurse, to help cope with the difficulty of relaying this information to her husband and children.
We first analyzed the Neuman Systems Model, which can be described as the following: The Neuman Systems model is based on the following ideals: “the client may be an individual, a family, a group, a community, or a social entity. Each client is understood to be unique based on the factors and characteristics that make up the entity” (Ahmadi & Sadeghi, 2017). These factors are important for the nurse to assess when considering the family as a holistic unit.
Within Neuman Systems Model, examples for each facet can be applied. Firstly, the cancer diagnosis itself represents the physiological aspect. Depression could apply to the psychological regard, and religion is related to spiritual angle of the model. The developmental part can be understood with the different ages of the family members (school children versus adults). When analyzing the Healthy People 2030 objectives, we examined biological, social, economic, lifestyle risks and life events. All of these have potential to negatively affect families when it comes to health history issues, racism, poverty, for example. It is imperative for the family nurse to consider these factors and create goals for the members of the group.
Further, resources for clients experiencing life-altering illnesses like cancer can help families cope. CancerCare is one of the resources listed in our presentation, which provides counseling services, case management, support groups, and financial and co-pay assistance.
This assignment allowed us to learn more about how to assess families in a holistic sense and analyze the many factors that influence them during a difficult diagnosis.
