Case Background
By adopting the pseudonym Rose, the patient’s and her daughter’s identity will remain confidential according to NMC (2018). Rose is a 77-year-old female with Alzheimer’s disease who lives with her only daughter (who has been her primary carer). Rose can’t learn new things and has poor long-term memory. Rose slurs and sees individuals who are not there. She needs help with hygiene, dressing, eating, and toileting. Rose has been presenting severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, including verbal aggression, disorientation, day-night sleep reversal, and reduced oral intake (Cerejeira, Lagarto and Mukaetova-Ladinska, 2012). Rose was transferred to a specialist hospital for a physical assessment, she was medically cleared.
Rose sustained a fractured right clavicle after a fall a year ago. She is being administered 15mg of codeine for pain. Rose is also on PRN Lorazepam for agitation.

Social History
Kate, Rose’s daughter, was interviewed to learn about her past and personality. Kate characterised Rose’s free, autonomous childhood. Rose lived in a little town with her two siblings. Rose was married to Kate’s father, Charles, for 40 years before he died 10 years ago. Carol mentioned Rose and Charles were very close. Rose moved in with Kate after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 2 years ago.
Kate described her mum as a strong and independent lady who liked making people happy. Katie stated that Rose taught in a primary school for 25 years. Rose loved teaching and would do anything to help a child. Rose is a non-smoker and does not drink or use drugs.
