Developing a portfolio is an ongoing process. Creating an academic portfolio is a way to showcase your work and it presents evidence of your relevant skills and abilities. An academic portfolio can serve as an organized record of academic experiences, achievements, professional development, and goals (Developing an academic portfolio, 2018).
Throughout my nursing career, I have continued to add to my professional goals by continuing my education. I began working on my Master’s degree a few years ago and then took a leave of absence from school during the COVID-19 pandemic to pursue travel nursing. I ended up moving out of my home state permanently and now that I am settled again, I have chosen to complete my Master’s degree to become a Nurse Practitioner. As I continue through my academic journey my ultimate goal is to work as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
I have also found ways to grow and add to my professional activities as a Registered Nurse (RN) while I am in the process of obtaining my Master’s degree. As an RN who has worked solely in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), I have obtained numerous certifications to advance my knowledge in my specialty. I have obtained my Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) certification since I worked as a Burn/Trauma ICU nurse for five years. I have also obtained my Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification as well as my Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification. These types of certifications help you maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of acute and critical care nursing (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, n.d.).
My goals align with Walden University’s emphasis on social change. The university defines social change as “a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies (Walden University, n.d.). Walden University provides students with the knowledge and resources to advance their careers through growth and development which aligns with my goals of becoming a well-informed, up-to-date PMHNP.
