For this case scenario, I would choose the clinical healthcare environment of the critical care unit to be a nurse leader. After reviewing the patient care delivery models, I have chosen two that would be considered for use within the critical care unit. The two patient care delivery models I have chosen to implement in the critical care unit are the team nursing model and the primary nursing model. The team nursing model would support safe, high-quality, person-centered care by assigning a group of team members to care for a patient. Utilizing the team nursing model within the critical care unit would allow for a team of healthcare providers to care for each critical patient to improve healthcare outcomes. The primary nursing model is another great patient care delivery model I have chosen to implement in the critical care unit. The primary nursing model would allow for one nurse to be assigned to one patient. A 1:1 nurse patient ratio in a critical care unit can improve patient care outcomes tremendously. Having one patient will allow the nurse to provide safe, high-quality, person-centered care.

            The decision-making model that I would apply to help facilitate selection of the model best suited for the environment would be the Rational Decision-making model. The Rational Decision-making model allows for a systematic sequence to help determine the best model suited for the environment. The steps I would take to apply the model are identify the problem, establish decision criteria, weigh decision criteria, generate alternatives, evaluate the alternative, choose the best alternatives, implement the decision and evaluate the decision.

The leadership competencies that will be needed to implement the new model are self-awareness, relational transparency, balanced processing, and internalized moral perspective.
