Today we watched the disturbing 2016 documentary called “Holy Hell”. This film spans 22 years of the director’s membership in the LA-spiritual cult, the Buddafield. As we learned from the film, “The Teacher” was an unemployed South American ex-actor. 

 

What were some of the characteristics that he had that made others want to follow him? 

 

What were some of the reasons people joined this cult, or why do so many people in our society feel a “void” or “incomplete”? 

 

What were some of the things that you recognized in the film that kept members of the cult tied to the cult community? 

 

One of the unique aspects of this film is that it shows the cult- as the members experienced it. The first half hour of the film makes the cult look welcoming, appealing- even “holy” and then, members, and you the viewer, begin to see the exploitation and abuse as the cult begins to unravel. Many films about cults focus only on the negative aspects of cult life. Did this approach help you to better identify with the mentality of those that became involved with this cult? 

 

Supposedly, there are cults in every community in America- The FBI estimates 3500 known cults exist in the United States today. Sociologists believe that our society has created an intense human desire for love, for belonging and for meaning since our current culture is moving away from personal and physical interaction with others, relying more on technology to communicate. How do you feel about this? 

 

How do you feel about this statement “I look at this pattern that we all, as a human race, have created- where there is someone at the top, and all the knowledge trickles down. This happens in corporations, in religions and it happens all over the world. Do people need someone to tell them what to do?”
