Though it is difficult to admit, bias and stereotypes exist among the nurses. It is only natural to have a bias towards some patients, but nurses should work to fix it. Implicit bias affects how a nurse feels and how they offer care. It is an unconscious trait that affects how humans interact with others and affect how nurses perform different practices (Sullivan, 2019). It is essential to recognize inherent bias since it is understandable to have certain feelings towards diverse populations or a person. For nurses to provide quality and safe care to patients, they must recognize bias and address it.
Addressing inherent bias and stereotypes is integral to providing culturally competent care. Nurses can address it by applying the following strategy. First, they need to have personal awareness, including analyzing the inward part and recognizing certain beliefs that can prompt unconscious bias. Personal awareness is critical to developing and cultivating self-regulatory behaviors to avoid factors that lead to bias (Persaud, 2019). Secondly, nurses need to acknowledge that the issue exists and needs to be addressed. Acknowledging inherent bias helps suppress thoughts, which leads to inherent bias. Lastly, nurses need to continue with education to enhance their knowledge of unconscious bias, prevent it, or reduce its prevalence.
