While it can be difficult to stereotype the Hispanic culture because it is made up of so many different groups of people, there are a few constants. One is the embrace of the family unit. Patients may even make health care choices for their family group that they, themselves, would not normally make (Sinclair, Chambers, & Davilla, 2021). Also important is to treat them with both dignity and respect; all patients should be treated that way, but feeling respected is very important to a Hispanic person. They are also very spiritual people and often believe in a higher power in their lives (Juckett, 2013). It is also important, as discussed last week, to use a medical interpreter and not family or coworkers who are not certified. This is extra important when it comes to high-risk scenarios like end-of-life discussions, a patient going to surgery, etc., and is not a step that can be skipped.
My plan of care for a patient includes involving family and their religion whenever possible, using an interpreter if the patient is not a fluent English speaker, and also showing deference and respect to their traditions. Being honest and asking non-sarcastic questions goes a long way with someone from another country. Also remembering to not believe the negative stereotypes that we as health care workers have heard is so important to providing care that does not add to the health care disparity already seen!
