We will focus on the three major salivary glands (Parotid, Submandibular and Sublingual). Â These glands secrete various amounts and types of salivary secretions. Â Serous secretions contain an enzyme that helps to breakdown carbohydrates and mucous secretions help to lubricate the mouth. Â All are very important for eating. Â Let’s conduct an experiment to help us understand these concepts:
feedback/commentary while completing the following experiment:
Â
1. Dry crackers or pretzel consumption
For the dry cracker/pretzel experiment:
Find some crackers/pretzels or any food dry in nature
Count how many of your food items you can consume before chewing becomes difficult due to lack of saliva. Â
This is similar to how patients with xerostomia feel while chewing food.
Comment on what you could recommend to a patient who describes food consumption difficulties due to lack of saliva.
Â
2. Sour lemon, sour candy consumption
Sour foods experiment:
Place some lemon or sour candy on your tongue and measure how fast the saliva takes to arrive. Â
Comment on any sensations that you feel in any of your major salivary glands (parotid submandibular, sublingual)
Comment on why sour foods trigger salivary flow during consumption. Â
