Need Assistance responding to peer

Think of a time when you encountered a challenge in the care of a patient related to a patient’s culture. This challenge could even be an ethno-religious culture or generational culture. 

            My patient was a Jehovah Witness, that was being seen and treated in the emergency department for GI bleed. ER physician unaware of the patient’s religion, orders a blood transfusion.  I went to the patient and discussed what was ordered and talked about how the patient would like to continue her care.

Who was involved in the decision making?
The patient, the patient’s husband, the doctor, myself
What resources were utilized to improve challenges?
The resources that were used to improve this challenge were good documentation and communication between myself and the patient.
What did you learn from this situation as a professional nurse?
As a professional nurse, I learned from this situation that you have to advocate for your patient whether you share the same beliefs or not.  While this could be a life saving measure for the patient, her religious belief was otherwise and it was not for me to try and change her mind.
