Case Study 3Â
Age: 30Â
Gender: FemaleÂ
The patient reports gradual onset loss. She says she is hardly aware of it, but that sheÂ
notices that her husband hears the baby in the other room more easily than sheÂ
does. She is concerned that she may have the same problem as her oldest sister, whoÂ
needed ear surgery. She doesn’t know the name of her sister’s condition, but says theÂ
sister had an “ear bone” problem – “some sort of a bone growth”.Â
She says that she can tell that her left ear is worse than her right ear because when sheÂ
switches the phone to that ear, she has to turn it up a bit.Â
She does not have any ringing in the ears. She does not report fullness of the ears, earÂ
pain, nor dizziness.Â
• Describe type and degree of the hearing loss, if any, in each ear.Â
• Where is the site of lesion (outer, middle, or inner ear)?
Â
Â
Do the audiometric findings seem consistent with the case history given? Why or whyÂ
not?
