Mrs. Stein- Hip Replacement Complications

Mrs. Stein, 76-yo, is 7-day post-op after a total hip replacement. She developed redness and oozing of foul smelling, tan coloured drainage from the hip incision on the 4th day of being post-op. Significant medical history includes arthritis and mild HTN. Because of surgical pain at the incision site, she did not easily transfer from her bed to the chair. The staples from the surgical incision were removed and an order was written for a moist saline gauze dressing to be applied to the area 3x/day.

Would this be the best approach to support wound healing? Provide a rationale and suggest alternative approaches.
When the dressing is removed, what are the critical factors to assess?

– provide different rationale/critical factors
