Interestingly, one of the things I hear most frequently as a con of pursuing advanced nursing practice is the rate of compensation. “I’d love to do that, but I’d never make as much as I do working bedside,” or, “we can’t compete with the hourly rates offered by the hospitals for RNs, so some people go through the whole process and then keep working as RNs.” But in all the resources I’m able to locate (nursingprocess.org, indeed.com, salary.com) indicate a higher median wage for nurse practitioners than registered nurses. What do you think is the root of this misconception? Does it have any credence? Do you think more nurses would pursue advanced practice if there was greater clarity surrounding compensation expectations?
