National Organization of Nurse Practioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies

Introduction

The critical competencies established by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) ensure that nursing programs give aspiring nurse practitioners the appropriate education for the workplace. Every single one of the competencies is necessary for all nurse practitioners, irrespective of the populations and specializations. Thomas et al. (2017) stated that these competencies allow nurse practitioners to meet first care by improving decision-making skills and critical thinking in the field. The competencies are split into detailed objectives that every nurse practitioner must exhibit in graduate school (Vanderhoef & Delaney, 2017). The nine elements of NONPF competencies consist of listed below.

Competencies Required for the Scientific Foundations

The scientific foundation competencies emphasize analyzing and utilizing data that can contribute to evaluating, improving, and enhancing healthcare delivery. It places a focus on providing care that is supported by evidence-based practice and makes use of qualitative and quantitative research. The program also incorporates practices in health literacy, sensitivity to cultural norms, and consideration for vulnerable populations (Thomas et al., 2017). The following objectives and expectations are included as part of the core competency required by the Science Foundation: Perform an in-depth analysis of the data and evidence to enhance advanced nursing practice. NP is the humanities within the nursing framework, and the sciences should be integrated. Improve the training procedures and the results it produces by translating research and other forms of knowledge. Create innovative practices founded on the combination of study, theory, and practical experience. I can decide independently without my preceptor’s help (Saunder et al., 2019).

Leadership

The areas of professional accountability, academic scholarship, and advocacy are the focal points of leadership competencies. These competencies help ensure that student nurse practitioners understand the extent of their practice, the norms that govern it, and that they are prepared to lead healthcare teams. Take charge of other healthcare in professional organizations and activities that impact the quality of advanced practice nursing and the health outcomes of a demographic emphasis (Thomas et al., 2017). In addition, cultural sensitivity, participation in professional organizations, and communication skills are included in the list of leadership competencies.

Quality

Quality competencies assure NPS considers price, access, and care when providing healthcare and inspires a culture of merit (Pulcini et al., 2019). Evaluating research and how it might contribute to improving health outcomes is a primary focus of quality competency. The ability to obtain, evaluate, and use the most recent data is required of NPs. They must do so while keeping in mind how healthcare’s cost, safety, and accessibility affect the quality of care. Either establish whether they can improve the quality of treatment by implementing systemic changes, NPs are required to analyze the policies and organizational structures that are currently in place. 

Practice Inquiry

The ability to apply research in practical situations is provided to nurses through the process of practice inquiry. This ability guarantees that nurse practitioners can comprehend research materials and put the acquired knowledge into practice. The practice inquiry allows learners to use their analytical skills, work together with others, and distribute information to populations to increase the value of healthcare and outcome (Vanderhoef & Delancey, 2017). The identity is how new research might improve the efficiency of existing standards or how current recommendations can be altered to promote positive health outcomes better; registered nurses need to be able to think critically. 

Literacy in Technology and Information Technology

Because new technologies are constantly being developed, nurse practitioners are expected to utilize these advancements to deliver better patient care (Pulcini et al., 2019). They can improve the efficiency of their practice by using new technology to gain access to, manage, create, and assess information relevant to health. There is a potential that the quality of care provided by nurse practitioners who incorporate nursing and communication technology (informatics) may improve. The following goals and standards are included under the umbrella of the core competency known as technology and information literacy: Advance medical treatment is necessary to implement suitable technology for knowledge management. 

Policy

The term “healthcare policy” refers to the guiding principles utilized to monitor and decide how to pay for various aspects of patient care. These rules, taken together, will eventually determine how the resources will be distributed at the municipal, state, and federal levels. An NP who is prepared to influence legislation that can benefit the healthcare system and their patients benefits from knowing various policies. They are the standards of nursing practice and promote ethical practice, policy context, cross-disciplinary impact, and the creation of health policy (Melissa, 2022). These policies are not primarily aimed directly toward healthcare, as social issues such as education, poverty, and violence also impact the medical profession. However, these policies are geared now toward healthcare. The following goals and requirements are part of the core competency for policymaking. Show that you know how Policy and practice are interdependent. Promote ethical policies that improve access, equity, quality, and cost, and advocate for these policies. 

Health Delivery System

The competency includes preparation, creating, applying, and dealing with community funds and procedures to provide and deliver excellent health care (Saunders et al., 2019). The ability to establish acceptable methods of providing healthcare that can meet the demands of patients, providers, and other stakeholders is one of the skills that nursing students learn. After identifying the requirements of various populations, NPs collaborate with communities to find solutions to the issues that must be addressed to provide effective and efficient care. The core competency of the healthcare delivery system entails achieving and exceeding.  

Ethics

Nurse Practitioners (NP)s who have completed the ethics competencies have demonstrated that they can comprehend the ethical standards that govern the healthcare community (Saunders et al., 2019). NPS is required to evaluate how the decisions affect the delivery of care and the ethical implications of those decisions. This information helps ensure that nurse practitioners can negotiate the challenges present within the medical community, enabling them to make decisions that are in the best interest of their patients. This program has helped my ethical viewpoint by protecting privileged information do not get indulged in unethical activities in my clinical practice.

Independent Practice

NPS must demonstrate that they have the academic and professional expertise required to work as licensed independent practitioners to pass the independent practice competency. The competencies require that NPS acquire the necessary skills, education, and licensing to demonstrate a critical scientific knowledge base that functions autonomously to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage healthcare issues as presented by the patients (Thomas et al., 2017). The competency test guarantees that NPs can perform all the legally allowed services. When receiving these services, the patients are evaluated, diagnosed, and treated with minimal guidance, oversight, or supervision. Participate in formulating, implementing, and assessing evidence-based practices and professional standards for care.

Proposed plan to engage in social change in your community as a nurse practitioner

According to Ridley, Newbiggin, & Street (2018), advocacy assists people to “have an opinion” and is framed to attain social justice. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I can advocate for these individuals in my community by encouraging clients to talk about the mental health stigma and encourage individuals to join the “Mental Health Walk” (Poghosyan & Carthon, 2017). People must comprehend how the mental disease affects a person and how they can be of help to those affected directly and indirectly, and by doing so, can change how people see mental health. Educating the community about mental health significantly affects the mental disorder population. Community health education is one of the strategies NPs can use as a primary healthcare intervention for a community (Wilson et al., 2021). They work with communities to identify key health issues and initiate direct care interventions through community health education.

Legislative and Advocacy Activities

NPS are patient and other nurses’ advocates and work to ensure specific issues are addressed within their settings. According to the North Carolina Nurses Association (2022), the Council of Nurse Practitioners is an active unit within the North Carolina Nurses Association; it works with the NCNA Board of Directors to recognize concerns significant to NPs and their patients and to cultivate approaches to discuss these requests. Within the Council, NPs have the chance to network and promoter NP distresses in North Carolina and to support the appreciation of NPs as clinicians of superior, personalized, and profitable care. This Council is intended to improve communication, networking, continuing education, and leadership development opportunities at the grassroots level (According to the North Carolina Nurses Association 2022). · Establishing efforts for NPs to meet with legislators 

· Gathering with political contestants to talk about health care, and the NP profession 

· Have NC NPs efficient on significant Policy and legislative (According to the North Carolina          Nurses Association 2022)

Conclusion

Nursing practice is founded on the capacity of NPs to understand and apply evidence in the delivery of care. Therefore, they must possess specific competencies that enhance their ability to function. NONPF provides an essential list of competencies related to modern nursing practice and critical for an NP’s job. These competencies seek to advance commitment to leadership development, knowledge acquisition, technological awareness, policy adherence, and ethical practice in meeting patients’ healthcare needs. NPS must therefore demonstrate these competencies when engaging with the community to address healthcare issues and advocating or driving legislative processes within the state of their practice area.
