According to Green (2018), “A geopolitical place consists of community boundaries, transportation infrastructure, geographic features, climate, vegetation, animals, and human-made homes and facilities”. Also according to Green (2018), “A phenomenological place centers on history, culture, economics, education, spiritual beliefs, values, common characteristics, or similar goals.” It is important as nurses to perform proper community assessments to know what specific interventions need to implemented in these specific communities. For example, a particular community that is living by standing water that is populated by a large number of mosquitoes can be put at risk for contracting malaria or dengue, in addition to the water being unsafe for consumption because it can breed parasites and bacteria. The nurse caring for this community should use this assessment in order to teach the population in this area about the importance of using bug spray, netting over their beds, and the symptoms associated with malaria and when they need to get treatment, It is also importance to explain that the standing water would need to be treated with filtration in order to make it safe for drinking. This is just one simple example, but the nurse needs to identify the community which she is working with an assess their level of learning and explain things in a simple way to understand. She needs to assess what other disparities that exist among the community, what further educational needs they need in addition and what other health issues may be affecting this community.

A second example I came across related to the breakdown of Venezuela’s healthcare system and the numbers of illness that this caused not only in the Venezuelan migrant people, but also in the host countries that the migrated to. According to Standley et al. (2020). “The deteriorating Venezuelan health care system and its negative repercussions for population health have become a regional issue as Venezuelans move to neighboring countries. Increased maternal mortality rates, the reemergence of infectious diseases that had previously been controlled or even eliminated, and the return of vaccine-preventable diseases are all of concern not only for migrants on the migratory path but for the healthcare systems of host countries as well”. It is also important to note that during the time of Covid-19 the numbers soared even higher in these countries that hosted the Venezuelan migrants because of the lack of health care resources they had in their home country. Many of the preventable infectious diseases also made a comeback and affected the communities in the host countries as well, this article points out. This would be another example of public health nursing needing to work with these sick communities and provide the care needed as the assessment shows how the host countries can work on helping the new population migrating in as well as their own community. As time passes along, the individuals would need to be screened for infectious diseases carefully, so no further disease is spread, vaccinations could be given as well to the community to contain the spread.
