Case Study 1: Care Summary AssignmentÂ
Assignment DescriptionÂ
As one of the primary goals of nursing is to provide patient-centered care, one of the best waysÂ
to learn about Canadian nursing practice by exploring unique human health stories. For thisÂ
assignment, you will work through a case study and—using your knowledge of nursingÂ
process, nursing regulation, and relevant health concepts—you will create a nursing careÂ
summary.Â
Your summary will include:Â
1. A care plan describing the nursing care for the patient’s top three priority nursingÂ
diagnoses.Â
2. A summary of a relevant BCCNM Standard of Practice that would guide nursing care inÂ
this case.Â
3. A discussion of how a related concept would inform nursing care.Â
You will work through the case study in three parts:Â
Part A: Exploring the CaseÂ
Meet the patient and learn about their health situation.Â
Learn about/refresh your knowledge of pathophysiology, diagnostics, andÂ
treatments for the patient’s medical diagnoses.Â
Learn about relevant BCCNM Standards of Practices.Â
Learn about health concepts that apply to the case.Â
Part B: Planning Nursing CareÂ
Interpret the assessment data and deduce appropriate nursing diagnosesÂ
Identify reasonable patient goals.Â
Identify patient-centered and evidence-based nursing interventionsÂ
Part C: Summarizing Nursing CareÂ
Based on your learning above, create a care summary.Â

Case Study 1: PART AÂ
Meet Frida and Dominik
Â
Freda Molinsky (age 67) lives at home with her husband, Dominik, in a house in Maple Ridge,Â
BC. She and Dominik emigrated here in 1978 from Czechoslovakia. Until her retirement eight yearsÂ
ago, Frida worked as a receptionist for a local realty office. Dominik works as a professor ofÂ
literature at SFU.Â
Frida and Dominik have three grown sons who live in various provinces in Canada, and they nowÂ
have five young grandchildren. Frida has always been an avid gardener and cook. She andÂ
Dominik enjoys traveling in their camper. They have traveled extensively throughout BC andÂ
Alaska.Â
In 2018, Frida was diagnosed with dementia. At first, she only demonstrated mild cognitiveÂ
impairment and, with support from Dominik, was able to continue with most of her normalÂ
activities. However, lately, she and Dominik have been struggling to cope. Frida now doesn’t rememberÂ
many of her friends and family can no longer cook food safely. Dominik doesn’t take herÂ
out of their house very often as she gets easily anxious and frustrated. Lately, Frida has startedÂ
falling frequently and has some episodes of urinary incontinence.
Â
Dominik has hired a companion to be with Frida at work. However, this is becomingÂ
costly, and Frida’s behaviors are increasingly challenging to manage at home, evenÂ
with this additional help.Â
Three days ago, she fell and hit her head on the coffee table. Dominik took her to RidgeÂ
Meadows Hospital, where she was examined in the ER. Her laceration was sutured, and another noÂ
serious injuries were found. As part of her discharge, a home care nurse referral was made.Â
You are working as a registered nurse at the Maple Ridge Public Health Unit, providing homeÂ
care for seniors in your area. You have been assigned to assess Mrs. Freda Molinsky.Â
Please see her referral form for more details.Â
