Simulation Topics—Pre Work

The following includes the “Pre-Simulation Work” students will need to complete prior to attending the simulation. The following topics will be covered during Simulation Day.

Pre-work includes your notes from the Pediatric textbook, recorded lectures, PowerPoints, videos, journal articles, ATI, etc. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BRING THESE NOTES to simulation to show you have  adequately prepared for the simulation. Students must bring notes for each of the bullet points listed under each topic.

(Student who do not bring in their notes will be dismissed from simulation and this will count as a missed clinical day- consider this similar to the “Ticket to Enter” but instead it is to the individual student’s preferred way of learning.)

Simulation Topics

Respiratory Distress in a child

Recognize respiratory difficulty
Investigate clinical signs and symptoms for an infant and child in respiratory distress
Discuss how you would assess a family’s knowledge of respiratory triggers
Implement safe administration of respiratory/inhaled medications
Identify medications in respiratory distress: the classification, mechanism of action, dosage range for inhaled administration, and side effects.
Review the implications of hydration in respiratory distress in infants and children

Dehydration

Define and describe the three types of dehydration and potential causes.
Differentiate between mild, moderate, and severe dehydration.
Describe different treatments for each type of dehydration based on the CDC guidelines
Identify and demonstrate teaching strategies with the parent and child. [Be familiar with oral rehydration and diets for children with fluid and electrolyte imbalances.]

Who is primarily patient population affected?
What are the signs and symptoms?
How is the virus transmitted?
What is the treatment?
What are the isolation precautions for gastroenteritis?
What are three ways to prevent the spread of gastroenteritis that you could teach to the parents of a pediatric patient?
Research 1 academic journal article regarding NURSING management of infectious disease, diarrhea, or dehydration, etc. in the pediatric population and prepare to discuss the findings.

Explain the difference between pediatric vs. adult trauma?  Consider aspects such as physiology, communication, legal issues, age, and types of injuries.
Identify at least 3 interdisciplinary team members that may be involved in a pediatric trauma beginning with the onset of injury to home care.
Review the various pediatric pain scales and discuss how to utilize the pain scale for a pediatric trauma patient.
