Opioid abuse is a serious public health issue, and overdose deaths are the leading cause of injury deaths in the United States (USDHHS, 2017).  In 2015, 12.5 million people misused prescription opioids leading to over $78 billion in economic costs for the United States including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatments and legal costs. In October 2017, President Donald Trump declared the opioid epidemic in the United States a national public health emergency.

This opioid misuse makes it more challenging to manage acute pain in those who need pharmacological treatment.  Due to this widespread problem, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (National Academies) developed a framework to evaluate clinical practice guidelines, make recommendations for new practice guidelines and suggest a future research agenda regarding these guidelines.  Prior to posting your discussion response, read the following highlights for the resulting report entitled:
