Physiologist John has been an exercise physiologist for over 10 years recently graduating at the top of his class achieving a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology. His thesis was entitle “The effects of Exercise on Clinical Depression”: he has published several articles on the subject as well as given presentations at the Sports Medicine Australia conference and most recently the American Council of Sports Medicine conference

During his Master’s he took a couple of units in Psychology and enrolled in a Diploma of Professional Counselling although he hasn’t completed the qualification. Due to his focus on depression in his thesis, John has read numerous articles on depression, mental health and counselling.

Now that John has his Master’s. he had decided to open his own clinic catering to those with mental health issues and who want to get fit. He is a member of Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA)

In John’s first week of opening his clinic, he meets Gerry – a 45 years old male, recently divorced and has a history of depression. Gerry is somewhat overweight and just started a new job having been unemployed for over a year. After Gerry’s initial consultation, John starts to see Gerry three times a week for training, in the initial sessions, Gerry is revealing a lot of information to John that is not relevant to the training session – how he is really struggling getting back into the workforce, his low confidence, drinks probably more than he should after work, sometimes he experiences suicidal thoughts, etc. Joh begin to offer suggestions that he learned from researching for his thesis, his counselling course and his psychology units. It could be seen that John is beginning to counsel Gerry along with training him
