Hello professor and class,

This topic really makes me hopeful that awareness is continuing to spread surrounding incivility in the workplace. I long wondered why the phrase “nurse’s eating their young” was well known and acceptable to a certain extent. Since the start of my career, I have been dedicated to ensure I did not follow the trend. I have been sure to treat everyone with respect and to be civil as possible, even when approached with incivility. I wanted to be the exception to the norm. As a nurse leader, I work alongside a team that is strong-willed on creating a culture of civility and enforces a zero-tolerance policy.

As an individual in a leadership role, I make it a point to lead by example. I dedicate my actions to be firm and fair, my speech to be caring and clear, and my tone to be calm and reassuring.

If presented with a situation where incivility is noted, I am prompt with addressing it through the appropriate chain of command. Recently, I was presented with a situation where employee hours were dramatically cut all of a sudden. The reason why was not clear at first, however, after an investigation, it was determined the manager was being uncivil after having a dispute with the employee. I educated the manager the action taken was deemed as retaliation and violated various laws and policies. After education, this manager was provided a corrective action and the employee was placed back on the schedule, ensuring she received her full-time hours.

Taking the right steps, each time, incivility is witnessed will help our profession as a whole create a culture of civility.
