Finally, read the studies carefully. Be sure you know who is saying what. Be sure you understand the methodology used by each of the research teams – how they were the same and how they differed.
Your posts should demonstrate that you know how each of the studies was designed, how the designs differed and why they came to entirely different results. (In terms of design, were the studies generalizations, causal studies or comparative studies? How was data collected? What were the variables in each study?)
Because you are evaluating these studies, you should apply the tests of worthiness and conclude which study you find to be more convincing and reliable. Your posts should reflect that you’ve looked closely at the tests of worthiness, as well as the “Steps in a Scientific Investigation” in Chapter 14, particularly steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 and considered how well each experiment followed these steps.
Finally, based on the exact claims made by each researcher, and considering all of the evidence presented in both studies, your posts should reach a conclusion as to which you deem more credible and reliable, and why your conclusion is the correct one.
Here are some of the things you should have determined or should know after reading and evaluating the two studies:
In what way or ways did Zadnik replicate Quinn’s study?
Exactly how many ways did Zadnik’s study differ from Quinn’s study? What was the most significant difference?
Which researcher had the better model?  Why?
How would the null hypothesis be stated for the Quinn study? For the Zadnik study?
If one of these studies found that the null hypothesis was false, does that mean the opposite is true? Why, or why not?
As scientists, these are basic questions you should be able to answer after reading both of these studies.Â
