Rita is a 48-year-old woman who lives in a group home with two other women. Rita has a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and has been finding it increasingly more difficult to complete her ADLs and remember to take her medications. Recently she has been experiencing paranoid delusions that have been getting worse and more distressing for her. She hasn’t slept for the last few days, has gone off her prescribed medications and hasn’t been eating well. Rita has been brought into the hospital by a member of the community mental health team. She is admitted to the mental health ward where you are working today, and you have been assigned to provide nursing care for Rita during your shift. You introduce yourself to Rita and find that she is very difficult to understand as she is speaking very quickly and is constantly changing the topic. Rita tells you that she is being followed by bad people who want to harm her and that she has voices telling her that she urgently needs to share her knowledge of these people with the Australian government so they can protect the community. She tells you she is very worried that she won’t be able to help people now she is in hospital. 4. Outline four approaches you would use to communicate with Rita in a respectful and effective way. 5. Identify two possible triggers (causal factors) Rita may react to and describe how you would deflect these.
