Below you will be exploring responses to common communications in the counselling process. These situations often lead the new RPN to feel at a loss of how to respond.
Your task is to develop and respond to each encounter that demonstrate a beginning mastery of the counselling skill immediacy. Provide rationale/ evidence as to why you chose that response.

 

You are dealing with a client who hints that he or she is sexually attracted to you. (i.e. “I’m not sure I can speak with such an attractive nurse!”)
You are counselling a client who has become demanding. (i.e. “If you can’t talk to me for an hour, I don’t think you care enough to help me”)
You are feeling confused and you are not sure what to do next in the interview.
Your client continually questions your training. (i.e. “You seem really young. I don’t know if you could help me with this problem” or “Did you go to school for a certificate, because I’m not sure you know what you are doing”)
Respond to one of your peers flipgrid videos and reflect on their introductory responses – are they similar or different from yours. Are there any of your peer’s responses that you will start to use and why?
