A 5-year-old male enters the emergency department with severe shortness of breath and sleepiness. While interviewing the mother, the nurse learns that this started about 1 hr after his first tee-ball practice. The mother assures the child has never had any problems like this. The nursing assessment reveals cyanosis, decreased capillary refill, decreased breath sounds, and severe intercostal retractions with nasal flaring. The nurse notes this to be a severe asthma attack and obtains a prescription for an immediate arterial blood gas.
