Please respond to my peer discussion, thank you. Introduction The workplaces that have been affected the most regarding nurses being burnout would have to be the nurses in the emergency room setting. The country with a high rate of nurses being burned out would have to be California (Hwang, 2021). The reason why there is a higher percentage of nurses in California that are most at risk of being burned out is that California is where everyone must go, usually to get better-paying jobs, weather is not drastic, and to start a better life for themselves. Where there are more people, there is a high chance of more significant injuries just because there are more people on the road and in the area. There are people with road rage when there is traffic, and in Los Angeles, it is common to see crucial accidents. The nurses within the emergency room who have been working for quite some time are usually more burned out than those who are just starting and barely getting hired (Greenwood, 2022, p.3). Nurses have been in this field for longer than nurses just getting their nursing licenses because they dealt with more trauma than new nurses. With any job, it is usually like this as well. When you are working somewhere for the long term, you feel as if the job is getting tedious and draining. Therefore, nurses with experience in the emergency room unit are worn out and have burnout. There is a law that nurses get to work full-time or part-time, which allows nurses, especially those working in the emergency room (Supreme Court, 2018, p.9). Working part-time will enable nurses to enjoy themselves, and they get to spend time with family as well. Working part-time also allows nurses to pick up extra shifts if they feel like it, so they can also see when they think they can work more than expected. A second law that helps nurses deal with being burnt out is being able to take vacation days from their job. One last rule that nurses have when it comes down to dealing with burnout has sick days to rest as well. Regarding specific culture, please acknowledge that you work for your family members when sick; this can also become an issue regarding being burned out (Johnson, 2022). For example, if a woman is pregnant, the husband must provide for her so she does not have to work, but this also means that he must work longer hours and pick up extra shifts. This stress on the one person providing for the wife and the baby can make a person, especially a nurse working in the emergency room, feel burned out and overwhelmed. When it comes down to nursing school, students that are becoming nurses and want to work in the emergency room are allowed to experience what it is like working in that unit. When nurses are being trained to be emergency nurses as well, they are probably not trained properly due to insufficient staffing, making it hard for new nurses to adapt and not get burnout fast (NIH, 2008, p.22). When nurses are not trained properly, they can feel stressed and fear working in that intense unit. When nurses are being neglected with their job, it is easy to get overwhelmed, and it becomes hard to stay focused. The cultural and ethical scholarly articles significantly impact what emergency nurses deal with as a group. Many nurses go through a dramatic burnout period in their life. Many people work in health care and come from many different cultures and have their own viewpoints on working hard and providing for their loved ones (Fish et al., 2022, p.18). Burnout, in general, can have server effects down the line as a health care provider. Ethical Perspective They are looking at an ethical perspective when it comes down to nurses being burnout, especially in working in the emergency room aspect. The laws that are proven to protect health care workers so they too can relax and not feel burnout are getting vacation days and sick days and being able to choose the times and days they work (Salvarani, 2019, p. 7). These laws are implemented because they allow healthcare workers to enjoy work even though being a nurse is very stressful. Qualifying to get vacation days allows nurses to rest and be with their families. When nurses get sick days, they can go to the doctors to help themselves with their own health. Being allowed to pick the days they want to work and the times they work also will enable them to have a flexible schedule to do things they must do to have a life they went to school for. The laws that helped nurses recover from being burnt out benefited their advantage. The positive effect is that nurses must get a break, and when they are not allowed to, that is against their rights. Evert nurse and every person that has a job should have the right to take a break and should not get punished for it (Kresic et al., 2021). If nurses are overworked and do not get a break, they might get burnout fast, and this can affect their physical state. When nurses get breaks, they feel relief that they are getting time to themselves to wind down and recollect their thoughts and being able to eat and take a nap if they are doing a double shift (Deschenaux et al., 2020). Nurses get to deal with their needs when they have their break, which makes them have less stress and can help with burnout. There are still a lot of nurses that are still struggling with managing to take a break. This can be an issue because there are so many things to do that nurses cannot take the paid leave they are allowed to take (Lunardi, 2020, p.4). This can lead to burnout if they continue with this habit. When we see things from an ethical aspect, when it comes down to nurses getting burnt out, there can be issues and conflict. For example, when nurses do not know what to do and are having trouble agreeing on what will happen to the patients (Silveira, 2020). When nurses do not understand the procedures needed to get the best outcome for the patients, this, too can be an ethical issue. When coworkers do not agree, this can easily be an issue when it comes to the emergency room unit because everything is so hectic. This study was done because it was shown that when there is conflict as a group, especially as nurses it can be troubling, especially when working in the emergency room. When one person seems stressed and cannot focus, everyone else in a team feels the person anxious, which makes them nervous (Thomas, 2016, p.11). When working in health care, you work as a team; therefore, when one person does not agreed, it can also be a massive conflict. The study also shows how nurses can burn out because they must make decisions fast; sometimes, they do not know the answer to everything, leading them to stress. Three key ethical aspects are moral distress, uncertainty, and dilemmas (KoƧ et al., 2022, p. 12). As before, when it comes down to moral distress, it can become an issue because when people are stressed because of home problems, they need to work as nurses. It becomes even more stressful because you are dealing with many patients at once, and you must know what to do when working in the emergency room. When nurses feel uncertain about how to treat their patients, it can be frustrating and lead to burnout in the long run. There was another finding that shares the same ideas and concepts when it comes down to ethical aspects. The article’s author also states how looking at a moral part can be challenging because disagreements can occur (Palazoglu et al., 2019, p.9). Nurses can think a certain way than other nurses, and that is when we see stress occurs, and with emphasis, long-term burnout can also happen. When nurses have conflict, it can mean they are building their character; when conflict happens, people learn how to deal with certain situations because they learn from their mistakes or others (Productivity Hub, 2022, p.7). Therefore, the authors claim that moral distress is not always dire. When stress comes into play, it can mean people can start coping with it and learn from it. Cultural Perspective Cultures are being examined in this paper about burnout because it shares with the readers that people have different perspectives and beliefs. When culture comes into place with the idea of burnout, there will be people for it and not for it. Culture also allows people to view a situation in a specific way. Everyone is a part of a culture; sometimes, conflict arises with certain people because some people may not be familiarized with their way of thinking (Raiger, 2016, p. 71). Culture also plays a significant role in women and men, and one should be superior to the other. Burnout, in this case, can be more common in men nurses than in women because men are known to be more masculine than women. Burnout is something we can overcome, and that is possible with the help of others. For example, nurses who feel they are becoming burnout can go out with family and friends to cope with the stress accumulated over time. The high demands of being with the patients all day and treating them and their needs can lead to clinical errors that compromise a safety culture. Nurses who are overworked might even feel hopeless and detached from their job. In this study, Egyptian nurses were more prone to burnout. A study by (Listopad, 2021) examines the cultural issues of Egyptian nurses being burned out because it significantly impacts their mental and psychological well-being. Being Egyptian puts a lot of stress on a person since their family wants them to be successful and to like what they are doing when it comes down to their job (Listopad et al., 2021, p. 5). When it came to Egyptian culture, women in relationships were at risk of burnout, and abuse of cigarettes also came into play. It seems like women were trying to hide their stress by abusing medication to pass the time while assisting patients or even harming themselves with cigarettes to ease their pain. With the pressure their family gives them to go through school and finally become a nurse, they see how draining and tiring it is because of all the assistance they must do. This study was shown to the public because it shows how Egyptian culture and probably many more have a mindset that you must continue to do your job even when things are getting tough. The author tries to express his feelings on Egyptian culture when it comes down to them having to deal with burnout. Understanding more about this culture and why they deal with burnout can help others know why they are such hard-working individuals. The author wanted to express that sometimes people come from complex countries, and they come here to America to start new, working as hard as they can to get the life they want (Listopad et al., 2021, p. 8). Another study showed that when Egyptian nurses had hospital experience for seven years or more, they had a 43.2 percent chance of being burned out, 54.6 percent were emotionally exhausted and 77.5 percent had high levels of reduced personal accomplishment (Anwar et al., 2017). This study provides evidence and percentages of how exactly Egyptians are being affected by being burnt out. This search was done over time, and it took years to finally conclude that Egyptian burnout is constantly rising, if not every year. The culture that Egyptians come from seems to be very demanding to be independent and not ask for help and thus can be a stress factor that can lead to burnout. Another research was conducted, which provided statistics on the cultural aspect of Egyptian viewpoints. The study expressed how Egyptian nurses from Jordan felt as if they were going through a crisis and experiencing low quality of life (Mudallal et al., 2017, p. 2). Due to the fact Jordan had very little knowledge about the job as a nurse, the women Egyptian nurses still had to manage to get around the issues that were arising. Having little experience as a nurse and being an Egyptian in Jordan made it difficult. They had temporary staff in Jordan as well-made Egyptian nurses’ burnout. Not only does Egyptian culture suffer from burnout, but Americans do as well. The only difference is that in American culture, people are used to being exploited in their jobs, which is unsuitable for the workforce. American workers have been dealing with burnout for the longest time. For example, lack of work autonomy, excessive workloads, and many more things (Henderson, 2022). Over time American culture will be known for its workers being part of an exploitation group. Self-care can do so much to help deal with burnout, but it is not the solution. Another issue that has come across in the cultural aspect of burnout is that there has not been much done to stop the problem. It seems as if it has been an ongoing issue, but studies have shown that there has been this escalating burnout rate (Dan Brennan et al., 2020). There will be a higher exploitation rate for all countries worldwide because burnout has worsened over the years. Conclusion Burnout is a form of exhaustion, and it is caused by constant and prolonged emotional, physical, and mental stress. Most of the time, burnout directly correlates to a career or profession. Er, nurses suffer the most burnout as they are overwhelmed with all the tasks they must perform and can get emotionally drained by their careers. The cause of burnout is when someone has too many tasks to complete and can’t keep up with all their responsibilities because of the instant demands (Dan Brennan et al., 2020). It is not medically diagnosed but impacts your mental and physical well-being (Dan Brennan et al., 2020). The effect of burnout is that it does not allow you to be productive. And reduces energy levels, and the long-term effects can make you more vulnerable to colds or flu. Emergency nurse’s career always has to do with burnout due to continual exposure to traumatic events, varying work schedules, and violence directed at staff members. During the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses suffered from more burnout than ever before because they were short-staffed and worked too many hours, and had to do more responsibilities than they should (Kate Phillips et al., 2022). There were various conducted by an academic journal that specifically related to ED nurses. The databases MEDLINE discovered that work schedules, violence towards staff, and lack of management support were the main reasons for burnout for nurses. Burnout is seen in ethical and cultural aspects. In an ethical view, burnout is that workers should not be too overworked because many hours without rest is seen as inhumane. Other countries have fewer work regulations and overwork their workers even until the break of death. Burnout also interferes with nurses’ performances as they will not be able to perform at the best of their abilities. The ethical impact of burnout even extends to clients and responsibilities to employers. It is the moral responsibility of their employers not to overwork them, fairly compensate nurses, and manage their workloads effectively so that nurses do not suffer and the patients by having overworked nurses. From a cultural aspect some countries do not acknowledge burnout in India, factories workers work unreasonable hours with barely any compensation, and managers do not even care about their working conditions. Some cultures view excessive workloads as just more success. At the same time, other cultures, like in the U.S, view burnout as serious mental health and physical threat to the well-being of a person and take it seriously by punishing those firms and companies that do not comply with safe working conditions (Burnout as an ethical issue, 2019).
