Leadership in Nursing Leadership in nursing is a core quality we can trace back through the history of healthcare; in fact, many of the nursing advancements and best practice protocols in place today exist because of the nurse leaders in history (Broome & Marshall, 2022). The need for nurses in leadership positions is imperative to positive patient outcomes and the continued integrity of care provided. Nurse leaders are present, approachable, engaged in direct patient care, are in touch with their staff, and remain task-oriented while creating and maintaining relationships with patients and staff (Hemburg & Salmela, 2021). Nurses are known to “rise to the occasion” when disaster strikes (Kerfoot, 2022, p. 205). In 2020, many nurses worldwide rose to the disaster of covid-19. Kerfoot (2022) states, “one of the best leadership tools is a well-prepared staff” (p. 205). Unfortunately, preparedness was the one thing our hospital staff could not accomplish at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic. Luckily, we are seeing more staff prepared for covid today due to increased availability of PPE and more understanding of the disease process. One key insight discovered in leadership research in nursing is communication effectiveness in leadership positions. Duggan et al. (2015) reported through their study that communication is one of the key qualities of a nurse leader and can create a more significant impact in teamwork when a crisis arises. Communication in the emergency department is an essential aspect of the nurse-resident relationship and imperative to promoting safe and quality patient outcomes. Recently in the emergency department where I currently work, I was pulling RSI medications to intubate a patient in respiratory distress. I communicated the verbal order before I went to pull the medications and again prior to administering the medications. Thankfully, due to repeating the dosage out loud, the resident recognized his error, and a near-miss medication error was prevented. This is just one example of the importance of communication in direct patient care. The second key insight gained from this research is how effective nurse leaders can be when pushing for change within healthcare. Broome and Marshall (2021) list multiple influential nurses throughout history that have paved the way for the nursing profession and can be attributed to many practices healthcare facilities continue to utilize in nursing. Examples like Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton, Lavinia Lloyd Dock, and Lillian Wald. These nurses have created organizations like the American Red Cross, American Nurses Association, and the National League for Nursing. Without the perseverance of these nurses, many nurse leaders today would not have the resources, knowledge, or networking abilities to efficiently lead their nursing staff (Broome & Marshall, 2021). In conclusion, nurses are leaders in everyday patient care by advocating for their patients, speaking up when necessary, and caring actions and behaviors. Nurses must recognize their unique skill set and persuasive traits and rise to leadership positions to better the profession, patient care, and healthcare for the future.
