Just add in my answer and also check my grammar please GROUP 2 Case 2: Volleyball Player • Infection on the leg. • 60% chance of recovery with antibiotics alone. • 80% chance of recovery with antibiotics and amputation legs. • Parents wants Doctors to amputate the leg. • Patient want to take the antibiotics only and no amputation of the leg. Theory: According to the nursing theory of Jean Watson, human being is a valued person to be cared for, respected, nurtured, understood, and assisted. In a moral theory of utilitarianism, it stated that an action or practice is right if it is leads to the best possible balance of good consequences over bad consequences for all the parties affected. In this case, the patient has two options, one is the use of antibiotics in which she has 60% chances of recovery and the other one using the antibiotics and amputation of the leg, however it is not stated in this case which leg are being infected. Both options, has dire consequences. The patient chose to take the antibiotics alone, while the parents of the patient chose amputation. In accordance to the drug watch, antibiotics has its working length and time, depending on what kind of antibiotics a person takes. Principle: In medical ethics, the patient has the right to refuse or choose his/her treatments, especially when he/she is in legal age (Autonomy), hence person has a freedom of thought, will and action. Rule: The Doctor and nurse have a duty and responsibility to respect their patient’s decision thus, health care professional need to put our patient in the best condition. The most important aspect of this is that the Doctors provided the patients with the accurate and pertinent information they required, and the only ones who will make decisions will be the patients themselves, depending on the situation. Action: As health care, we must first give information both to the patient and parents on antibiotics, infections. And for the decision, with respect whether patient’s decision or the parent’s decision will work, if patient refuse of choosing amputation the healthcare provider should ask the patient to sign a waver as regard to his/her refusal. This is to guarantee that what ever happen to the patient, the healthcare professional would not be liable of it. In addition, healthcare professional should educate the patient as well as the parents as regards to the advantages and disadvantages of both options and do not give reassurance to the patient. Tell them the truth, but in a way that it will not cause them anxiety and fear. Conclusion Based on the case, there is a 60% chance of recovery if the patient takes antibiotics alone, while 80% chances of recovery if the patient will take antibiotics and amputation on her leg(s). however, the patient doesn’t want to d0 amputation and just take antibiotics while her parents wants to d0 amputation. As what autonomy discussed, the patient has a freedom of thought, will, and action especially when he/she is the legal age. It’s not only the hospital, healthcare worker that needs to respect the decision so with the parent too. The reason for this is that for healthcare workers to give information to patients, it is also their duty and responsibility to comprehend and consider their patients decision. They can’t force their patients to do things they don’t want to.
