Patient Care Scenario A 58 year old Italian male, Robert, is hospitalized for a double coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedure. Robert has a history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Up to nine years ago, he used to smoke about one pack of cigarettes per day. Both of his parents also had a history of cardiac disease and passed away before their 65th birthdays. Robert has expressed fear and anxiety regarding the surgical procedure and how his medical needs will affect his family. He is employed full-time as vice president of large housing foreclosure business. His job is a salary position and requires him to commute to the various mortgage lenders across the state. Quite regularly his job tasks must be addressed at different times of the day. This often requires countless hours spent completing the work. He and his wife have been married for 36 years. They have two grown children and five grandchildren. His wife works two days a week and regularly provides daycare for their grandchildren. When Robert does take time off from his job, he enjoys the large Italian meal family gatherings. He and his wife have strong family and religious values. They would love to spend their vacations traveling together. However, they spend much of their free time assisting their children with their household projects and care of the grandchildren. He and his wife have expressed they will travel when the children are established in their careers, and the grandchildren are older.
