Can you reply to the post below When I used to work on the floor, my colleagues and I would usually give change-of-shift reports at the nurses’ station. Our manager once encouraged us to do this at the bedside, where the patient and family could hear us. We did this for a few weeks, but eventually, most of us started giving reports at the nurses’ station again. Even now, when I would walk through the floor during shift change, most nurses are gathered around the nurses’ station or hallways where the patient and families cannot hear them. My clinical issue of interest is why should nurses be giving reports at the bedside, and what difference does it make compared to doing it elsewhere? I began my search on the CINAHL and MEDLINE combined database using the search term “bedside shift report,” making sure to refine my results in the “limit your results” section. This initial search produced 94 search results. I then added “patient” in the second search box and “nurse” in the third box, which narrowed the results further to 72. The best evidence can be found in literature published after thorough and effective research (Walden University, 2018). A strategy I found useful to increase the effectiveness of a database search is to read through the subject headings. Reading through subject headings related to the search results can help researchers discover different terms they could use instead (Walden University Library, 2021). For example, instead of using the words “shift report” I could use “handoff,” which would bring about different results. Another strategy that assisted me with conducting a rigorous database search was to use the word “or.” Using the word “or” can help researchers broaden their search for articles that may use different terms for a particular subject of interest (Walden University Library, 2018). For example, when searching for articles regarding bedside reports, I would use the search phrase, “shift report or handoff.” References Walden University Library. (2018, July 6).
