Gary You are a case worker in a community based early intervention program. You have a client, Gary aged 22 years, who has attended his first appointment and said he was persuaded by “a mate” to attend for counselling to control his anger. In short Gary is a perpetrator of physical abuse against his female partner, Julie, who is 20 years of age. Although there is no Apprehended Violence Order in place Police have been called to the home as a result of neighbour concerns about the level of shouting and screaming that has occurred. Gary is a labourer by occupation. He has only had casual/ contractual employment and has been subject to periods of unemployment, the longest being three months Gary is currently unemployed and renting with his partner in a shared house with another couple. He is actively looking for work Julie’s family have also labelled him as a “bludger” when he has been unemployed which he found very difficult as he feels he can “match any man in a hard day’s work” He says that he really loves Julie and that she is the best thing in his life and he does not understand why he gets so angry with her.
