Instructions: You are a long-term support worker

Instructions: You are a long-term support worker in a group home for three (3) people with mental health issues. You have built quite a strong relationship with the residents and their families. Each resident has a current individual recovery plan that outlines their hopes and dreams (their goals) and how the person and the service will work towards achieving these goals. Tom is an eighteen (18) year old male who lives with schizophrenia; Renae is a thirty-five (35) year old female who has chronic PTSD, and David who is twenty-five (25) who has borderline personality disorder. With the current changes to individual packages of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding for residents, some resident’s individual recovery plans and mental health needs are being compromised. One (1) major issue is that because of the recent yearly budget review, management has decided that it can no longer support many of the psychosocial activities. From your understanding of the mental health recovery needs of the residents you believe that this decision will be detrimental in the long term to their recovery. The residents have come to you, to express their feelings of displeasure with this decision and ask for your help. They are concerned about the reduction in support, and they are scared that if they raise the issue with the service management that they might lose their place in this residence, and they don’t want this to happen. They are unsure if they should speak out or not. Develop a self-advocacy plan for each of the residents (Three (3x) self- advocacy plans) which includes: Step by step plan which details the individual’s strategic approach, and which are time framed. Follow-up process for determining further strategies. 6. Develop a promotional resource about self-advocacy. Please consider potential barriers to self-advocacy. This could be a flyer, poster, collage, short video, wallet card, YouTube clip. 8. Briefly outline how you would model assertive communication skills throughout the advocacy process. 9. Identify what the self-advocacy options are for the above participants and briefly outline opportunities where the right to self-advocacy can be asserted.
