What happened in the incident? 1. In this incident a Houston doctor accidentally gave a 4-year-old boy an unintended vasectomy when supposed to be doing a routine hernia surgery. The unintended vasectomy was performed causing the child’s family to file a lawsuit. Who was involved? 2. 4-year-old R.B., the parents, Dr. Susan L. Jarosz, medical staff, lawyers, assistant professor of urology, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine. What were the ramifications for the patient and/or staff? 3. The patient was fine and wasn’t experiencing any pain as far as the doctors and facilities they were filed a lawsuit. It was mentioned that it is too early to know whether or not the 4-year-old will experience fertility problems in the future from the surgery. Reflect on the incident and think about some causes and possible interventions that could have prevented the error. 4. After reading about the incident I think the doctor should’ve made sure she was using the correct resources to perform the surgery. She should have been very careful and specific with the surgery because she was working with a child and performing surgery on a child is very different from performing surgery on an adult. The assistant doctor could have triple checked and corrected the doctor when needed to see what procedure they needed to perform for the child’s hernia instead of giving an unintended vasectomy.
