One of the examples is tobacco control. Tobacco use is a major risk factor of chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke (CDC, 2021). In addition, tobacco user consumes more medical resources than non-smokers, and thus greater medical expenditure. As research shows, health care costs for smokers are 40% higher than those for nonsmokers. To address the tobacco epidemic, WHO member states adopted the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco control (WHO FCTC) in 2003. Currently 182 countries have ratified this treaty (WHO, 2022). In the United States, President Obama signed the Tobacco Control Act on June 22, 2009 (Wikipedia, 2022). The CDC shows the health impact within 5 years including decreased exposure to secondhand smoke, decreased prevalence of tobacco smoking, decreased tobacco consumption, and fewer deaths and hospitalizations from cardiovascular disease (CDC, 2022). In addition to leading to reduced overall smoking rates, implementing smoking bans (that is, all public places completely smoke-free) at a faster pace can also play an important role in minimizing the burden of smoking-attributable diseases and deaths among nonsmokers (Flor, et al., 2021). As a nurse, I always ask patients about smoking status and assess their motivation to stop. Helping them to plan and prepare for cessation. Nicotine replacement therapy may also help smokers stay off smoking by reducing their withdrawal symptoms. As educators and health promoters in the community, nurses facilitate conversations about the risks of smoking and the benefits of quit smoking.
