Angela Casey (58) has had a stroke.

Angela Casey (58) has had a stroke. Angela moved in with Eddie (79) her father, his wife Tomasina and Angela’s school aged children. Although Angela has had some recovery physically from the stroke, she has hemiplegia and remains very dependent on Eddie for personal care. Eddie continues to look after Angela as well as looking after the household and his family. Angela continues to deteriorate and is now incontinent and exhibits challenging behaviours such as screaming. Eddie gave up his paid job in Community Transport when he began to care for his daughter which has changed the family’s standard of living and reduced Eddie’s independence. Eddie’s day is long, beginning at 5:30 when he showers Angela, gets the children ready for school and his day continues until he puts Angela to bed at about 9pm. Sometimes however, he gets up during the night to attend to Angela. Eddie finds it difficult to sleep, and is becoming cranky with his family and sometimes argues with Tomasina. Eddie has recently applied to a community service organisation for support so he can have some respite with Tomasina and the children and have a little time for himself. In the past he enjoyed attending bridge and teaching Sunday school. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the primary carer (Eddie), family members and the service organisation in this scenario. What is the impact of caring for Angela on Eddie and on his family? Outline how you would support Eddie in his role as Angela’s primary carer. How would you involve Eddie in the development of Angela’s individualised support plan? Describe how you would manage the issues of privacy and confidentiality in this situation.
