Reply to this discussion Problem Statement: Emergency nurses work in one of the busiest and most stressful departments in a hospital and, as such, may experience burnout more often than nurses working in other nursing units. Emergency nurses are highly susceptible to burnout due to continual exposure to traumatic events, varying work schedules, violence directed at staff, and in recent times, due to the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic. As ER nurses face these compounding factors, they may start feeling disengaged and detached, which are the first warning signs of nursing burnout. When the issue is not addressed through proper self-care and adequate recovery from work, nursing burnout can lead to feelings of cynicism, hopelessness, and even depression. For patients, nurse burnout can directly impact their health. The most dangerous risk associated with burnout is a decrease in the quality of patient care and patient safety. Understanding the effects of nurse burnout may help contribute to hospitals employing burnout reduction strategies for nurses such as through wage increases, professional mobility, stress reduction and opportunities for learning and leadership. In addition to preventative actions taken by employers, supervisors, and managers, understanding nurse burnout has the potential to contribute to educating nurses to take extra precautions on their own to avoid work related fatigue. In ER nurses, what is the effect of mindfulness meditation on stress levels, on a reduction in work related fatigue compared with no intervention within a 1-month time frame? Nurses experience excessive levels of burnout and stress due to the nature of their work and working conditions. Emergency nurses are highly susceptible to burnout due to continual exposure to traumatic events, varying work schedules, violence directed at staff, and in recent times, due to the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic. Managing clinical work stress is not only critical for patient care, but also for nurses’ health and long-term tenure. A possible solution to nurses’ work stress may rest in learning to manage clinical work through the development of mindfulness. Research has focused on the effectiveness of mindfulness training in stress reduction. The concept of mindfulness emphasizes present-moment awareness, in which a person purposefully pays attention to the present-moment experience in a non-judgmental way. Previous studies have reported that mindfulness-based interventions significantly improved mindfulness levels and reduced stress levels in the general population, as well as among specific populations such as healthcare workers, thereby enhancing well-being. A literature review was conducted to assess the efficacy of mindfulness mediation in the mitigation of stress in nurses. The literature review was conducted using the research database EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). The following keywords were used in the search: mindfulness, meditation, nurses, ER nurses, and stress reduction. Inclusion criteria included peer-reviewed articles that were written in English, scoring level III or higher on the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Rating Scale and a sample population comparable to ER nurses. Exclusion criteria for articles included those that were below level III on the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Rating Scale and articles in populations other than those identified as comparable populations to ER nurses. The mindfulness meditation tool was found to be successful in decreasing levels of stress felt by medical students, pharmacy and allied health students, and a randomized controlled trial of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Mindfulness meditation has shown to help maintain current stress levels, while also stopping an increase in stress. Managing stress is important for productivity, performance, and positivity. Implementing mindfulness meditation in daily life, helps to manage one’s stress levels and decrease anxiety.
