Project Presentation and Timeline This presentation will focus on helping residents of this community make and seek out healthier food choices. We will touch on several key factors regarding healthy eating. Literature from the CDC will be dispersed on understanding the nutrition facts on food labels. This can guide individuals on serving sizes and the number of calories, carbs, fat, fiber, protein, and vitamins in those servings (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). For visual stimulation we have displays courtesy of Professor Yore showing the amounts of sugar, salt, and fats in everyday food items. We will educate attendees on small changes they can make toward making healthier choices such as substituting sodas for water with fruit or vegetables added for flavor. We will also give them tips on ways to integrate vegetables into their daily meals. To ensure we provide reputable information, education for this presentation will be gathered from the CDC and Healthy People 2030. Learning Objectives The two learning objectives determined to be important for this community is to first obtain knowledge on the necessity to read food labels, as previously mentioned. Secondly, this presentation with illustrate the pitfalls related to poor nutritional choices & how it contributes to health disparities in urban communities. Our specific focus is on the low-income population situated in a food desert where a market has opened to help fill the void of healthy food options. In, order to measure the knowledge gained from attendees, we will conduct a survey of information provided to assess what was learned with choosing healthier options. Additionally, encourage setting attainable goals to improve eating habits, such as purchasing 1 fruit or vegetable to include per meal. Goals should be realistic & may need to start smaller for some individuals, like purchasing a new fruit or vegetable per day. We will coordinate with the agency on tracking outcomes based on inventory results for healthier foods purchased after 30- 60 days from the date of the informational presentation.
