(TMU, 2021). This requires knowing the results, benefits, and implications beyond what is obvious and creating a workable action plan based on this assessment when using different modes of thought to choose a course of action (CNO, 2018). Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a useful tool for prioritizing the patient’s care needs. However, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs cannot be applied in all situations, and we must consider client diversity, such as gender, sexuality, and culture, especially if the patient decides that this is not a priority in his or her care (Nielsen, 2021). To illustrate, a female patient visited our clinic who was always friendly and cheerful, regardless of the reason for her visit. However, she came in one day very quietly, wearing sunglasses and not chatty, and she is requesting medication for dizziness and pain in the back of her head, as well as a sick leave certificate to rest. Due to cultural differences, my male doctor was unable to assess her head and had to rely on medications, safety nettings, and sick leave. Nonetheless, I made small talk with her and invited her to our lounge to drink water. She then requested that she be seen by a female doctor this time. Hematomas were discovered around her eyes and belly, as well as a swollen occipital area. She was diagnosed with occipital hemorrhage and physical abuse because of her husband’s recurrent beatings. Regardless of how busy I was in the area, I tried to prioritize patients using good clinical judgement based on their urgency of needs. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can help determine a client’s needs, but therapeutic nurse patient communication is critical in prioritizing the critical care the patient requires. The patient’s care will be jeopardized if good communication is not maintained. Do you agree?
