In elderly adults, it is extremely important

In elderly adults, it is extremely important to assess their level of consciousness. It is common for people to become confused or develop dementia in their old age. If an elderly adult is not oriented or seems disengaged it is important to notify the physician and discuss treatment plans and the next steps in their care. Assessments of elderly patients should focus on the quality of life, and their functional status, and look for any complex issues (Spirgiene, 2018). As people age, they become more fragile as their bones become brittle and their balance becomes less stable. The assessment needs to be head to toe and cover all body systems from neurological, urinary, musculoskeletal, etc. Elderly patients tend to not have as much of an appetite due to changes in their taste buds. It is important for the nurse to make sure the patient has not lost a significant amount of weight or is malnourished or dehydrated. The nurse should ask about their diet, how much they eat, and how many fluids they consume in a day (Victoria, 2021). One last special consideration would be assessing their toileting habits. We need to make sure there are no issues with bladder control or potential kidney problems. One great community resource a nurse could use for dementia patients’ family members would be the James L. West Senior Day Program. This program is designed to be an adult day care for the elderly with dementia whose family members care for them in the DFW area. This program allows people to go to work and ensure that their loved ones are safe and cared for throughout the day. A reply with a reference to support
