Case Scenario 2 – Ishan, telephone helpline

Case Scenario 2 – Ishan, telephone helpline You are a community service worker in a small rural town and you manage the Helpline for the Family and Neighbourhood Service. One morning you receive a telephone call from Ishan, a 29 year old male who sounds very upset and quite agitated. He is a recent arrival in Australia and speaks little English. Ishan comes from an extended family and he is the eldest of 4. He has a wife and two young children who live with his parents. The family is still in the country of their origin. Ishan has been to the Service before for support with resettling and has moved into a small bedsit. He was a teacher in his homeland and is currently employed here doing casual manual labourer with the local council. He has not connected with any of the other workers and generally sits alone during breaks. He appears to have no other social networks. Ishan recently presented to the local medical practice for stitching up, after a single motor vehicle accident, when the car he was driving ran into a tree on a country road. Ishan was under the influence of alcohol at the time and will have to appear in court. He has a record of being aggressive when intoxicated. Drinking alcohol is not part of his culture or religion. Identify and assess the person’s current suicide risk and level of immediacy. Justify your answer and include the assessment tool used? What would you do to increase the person’s safety? List the services and/or interventions that might be appropriate? How would you review and report on the support provided?
